ABSTRACT
As the arc burns, the electrodes are consumed and must be moved forward to maintain optimal operating distance. In modern arcs this is performed by geared motors, but requires constant attention by an operator. In addition, the positives must be replaced roughly every half-hour and the negatives last about twice as long.
