ABSTRACT

Homebirth midwifery has been legal in Colorado now for more than a decade, becoming law in May 1993. 1 The law was renewed by the state legislature in 2000, passing through the state House and Senate without a fight. Colorado Governor Bill Owens signed the law renewing the legalization of direct-entry (homebirth) midwives on June 5, 2001, and homebirth midwifery care remains a legal option for Colorado women. In 2001, there were forty practicing registered homebirth midwives in the state who attended 566 births (DORA 2001). 2
