ABSTRACT
In the musical world, the twentieth century was characterized by research into new ways of playing traditional instruments. Virtuoso performers collaborated with pioneering composers, together discovering a range of new sounds elicited from conventional instruments. These new ways of playing became known as extended instrumental techniques.
