ABSTRACT

Composing for a traditional ensemble is a challenging task because there are numerous well-known works already in the repertory. However, this should be a source of instruction rather than a possible comparison to be feared. Traditional ensembles include string quartet, wind quintet, brass group, percussion ensemble, and mixed instrumental ensemble. In this chapter, music from some of these groups is discussed, highlighting potential points of interest to a developing composer, as well as issues of how to utilize invented musical materials and how to expand them to produce an extended piece of music.
