ABSTRACT

When photographing children, photographers should be particularly sensitive to personal space. Children have their own personal space and at times parents and others are not sensitive to this when photographing them. I was not when taking a photograph of Reneé, my daughter, then 5 years old. She was sitting on her tricycle, having fun and not wanting to be bothered posing for a photograph. My insensitivity to her wishes and my determination on getting the photograph violated her privacy. To protect herself against my intrusion, she partially covered her face and spoke to me in the visual language of gesture and eye, telling me she did not want her picture taken (Figure 8.4).
