ABSTRACT

Pictures are made to be looked at as original images or as reproductions in printed media such as magazines, newspapers, books, brochures, catalogs, billboards, and electronic media such as video, computer monitors, photo CDs, and CD-ROMs. The medium used to display the image and its context will have an effect on how the picture is experienced. A matted and framed photograph displayed in a well-lit gallery will be seen differently than an unmounted photograph pinned to a wall. A photograph reproduced in a quality magazine will look much better than one in a newspaper. A color print viewed as an original (object color) and also viewed on a video screen (illuminant color) represents different color modalities and will be seen differently.
