ABSTRACT

I am dealing with McCarthy’s novels in chronological order of publication but his two dramatic works do not fit easily into this structure. Although The Stonemason was written several years earlier it was not published as a text until 1994. It has, as yet, never been performed in public in its published form:¹ it thus becomes difficult to place the play in the sequence of McCarthy’s texts. e fact that it has not been possible to see a production makes analysis more difficult. ere is no way of knowing how the play might have been modified in practice, possibly by McCarthy himself. erefore analysis and evaluation must be related to the only available text. For this reason I am dealing with the play as a short, relatively unimportant segment of McCarthy’s work, and placing it with The Gardener’s Son at the end of the sequence of works set in the South.
