ABSTRACT

The construction of American wartime identity occurred not only through the scripting of the character itself, but also through the story narratives. These issues included in this study, Captain America Comics numbers 1-10, were chosen because they compose almost the entire Simon and Kirby run and they all were written prior to the entry of the United States into World War II. Henry Baldwin, American financier, provides money to the British to fight against the Germans but is kidnapped by the Nazis and taken to Germany before being rescued by Captain America. That story ends with a rousing speech by Captain America to the people of Gotham City. American national identity in Captain America Comics is constructed, in part, through a process of differentiation of contrasting the United States with various others, each one different from the United States in some key way.
