ABSTRACT

The wat~r, that looks turquoise blue from a distance with the sky reflected in it, appears quite green when looking down into its depths from a boat; it is so clear that you almost expect to see Sabrina braiding her hair with pearls down there beneath a curious long streak of white foam with crystallized balls that glisten in the sun like brilliants. But it is not even (!eopled with shadowy nymphs; its history is too far back and too tragic for such pleasant visions.
