ABSTRACT

As has hopefully been gleaned by the previous chapters in this book, working memory skills are critical to our success in many day-to-day behaviors. Working memory skills change across the lifespan, and can be altered, both positively and negatively, by numerous activities in which an individual engages. With this chapter, we hope to elucidate yet another daily process for which we use working memory, that is, decision-making, and how aberrations in working memory and decision-making processes may play a role in addictions, such as substance abuse and gambling behavior.
