ABSTRACT

The distinguishing character of business economics (företagsekonomi) in Sweden is its close affiliation with practice and practical problem solving. As in many other countries, the subject has developed through fragmentation, and its popularity among students, undergraduate as well as doctoral, is increasing at a stable rate. Although the top echelons of the major companies have traditionally been dominated by engineers, the trend has changed toward graduates in business economics during recent decades. Given a small home market, since the beginning of industrialization, Swedish industry has had to seek expansion through international markets. This has encouraged a steady flow of international influence on what are considered to be the most sophisticated ideas in business economics.
