ABSTRACT

This is an element of technique that I have had to handle frequently. Some people, when you see them in the waiting room, say to you, “How are you?” This is a standard greeting in the United States and sometimes means nothing except for saying hello. In Chinese, the phrase for “hello” (ni hao), means “you good.” To ask someone how they're feeling, the question is ni hao ma? This means, “You good (word that means a question)?” The phrase is the same, except for the word that means question.
