ABSTRACT

Although most people in the 21st century use private or government insurance to pay for treatment, occasionally you will see someone who prefers to pay you directly. Some years ago, I was asked by a 67-year-old man if he could simply pay my fee and not file for Medicare benefits. I found out (and this still holds true) that, in the United States, physicians are automatically included in Medicare and must use Medicare's fee schedule. I, therefore, could not do what he requested.
