ABSTRACT

After the fall of Rome, as we know, many went about repeating the old accusation against Christianity that it had been a leaven of decadence for the City. Uneasiness was general in all classes of society. Augustine understood that this could only be dispelled by a real renewing of public mentality.l This was the reason of his writing the City of God. He worked at it for thirteen or fourteen years; but from the beginning he had conceived its vast proportions,2 and it was owing to his responsibilities which were too heavy 3 for him that he delayed its completion for so long.
