ABSTRACT

The subject of this chapter is our attempt to look more closely at 0–4-year-old children in the care system, and to describe a pilot service that aimed: to identify their social-emotional needs quickly; to promote their development and attachment to their caregivers; and to contribute towards better care planning. We will discuss what led us to identify this need and describe the context in which this work developed. We will describe the social and emotional screening and intervention service that we implemented for 0–4- year-old children in care to an inner-London Local Authority. For each of the stages of this we will discuss process issues with the implementation of the screening and mention the limitation of the work.
