ABSTRACT

Global concerns about the transformation of the planet and associated consequences such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and social pressure concerning natural resources and inequality have triggered the need for a profound reflection on the history of these transformations. These transformations have been provoked by human activity that can be observed in the landscape and correspondingly in its many ecosystems. Understanding these processes may represent a first step in redefining our goals of achieving a more sustainable way of living. This chapter examines a number of small steps taken toward achieving urban sustainability in the metropolitan area of Mexico City.
