ABSTRACT

Unlike most of the contributors to this book I am not, and have never been, a fully qualified police officer. I almost was; but my police career was cut short after around seven months as a probationer when I was arrested on suspicion of obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception. I hadn’t stolen anything or committed any serious offences, but neither was I really planning a career in the force. No, I was a BBC journalist who had infiltrated Britain’s second largest police force in order to investigate allegations of institutional racism.
