ABSTRACT

Amsterdam is an international and multicultural hub. The higher education institutions in the city therefore aim to equip their students with the competences to function successfully in such a setting. However, how successful they are is not easy to define. This is mainly due to the fact that intercultural competences of students are not defined and assessed in a systematic and consistent way and that the professional field is not particularly explicit about the exact nature of these competences. The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) faces challenges that differ from those of a research university. In this chapter, the internationalisation policy of HvA, and the issues it faces with respect to its implementation, are placed in the global and Dutch contexts of internationalisation of higher education.
