ABSTRACT

In a scene from the queer experimental filmmaker Cui Zi’en’s recent documentary about lesbian and gay life in China, Queer China, ‘Comrade’ China (Zhi Tongzhi) (Cui 2009), gay activists approach people on the street to ask them how they feel about same-sex marriage. 2 One elderly man says it depends on their intentions but if they love each other, that’s fine. When asked how he would feel if it were his own children, his reply is, ‘No way’.
