Gender as a Categorical Source of Property Inequality in Urbanizing China

The house is in my husband’s name. Everything gets registered in men’s names. No-one writes women’s names on anything. Some people even joke, ‘How come households only contain men and their kids?’ Unless a woman starts her own business or factory, acts privately, only then might it be in her name. But for women like us, very few. Hardly any. ¹
