ABSTRACT

As a beginning teacher of English the thought of tackling drama in your own classroom may be daunting, particularly if you work in a school where drama exists as a discrete subject, taught in custom-built drama studios by specialist drama practitioners. You may be a capable teacher of drama in your own right but, equally, there are many teachers of English who can be apprehensive about how to fi t drama into their schemes of work and how to tackle it given the fundamental physical restrictions of their classrooms. Whilst drama is an integral part of the English curriculum drama and English also have their own distinct and separate content which can lead to an uneasy relationship between the two. Take heart! This chapter aims to reconcile these tensions by considering practical, manageable ideas about how to approach English using drama techniques in the classroom, techniques which could also enliven pupils’ interest and galvanise their enthusiasm.
