ABSTRACT

There is no one best way to meet all students’ needs in teaching. Recognizing that students are different from one another, teachers should adjust curricula and create a variety of instructional pathways so as to provide varying opportunities to reach the intended learning goals based on students’ differing abilities, strengths, and needs. Effective assessment is vital for differentiated instruction because high-quality differentiated instruction considers students’ diverse needs and learning abilities while ensuring due student achievement. However, traditional assessments such as classroom observations, class discussions, homework and tests are limited for monitoring each student’s learning process. Unlike traditional assessment tools, emerging technologies including social media provide great potential to monitor individual student learning process in differentiated instruction. Such technology-based assessments using various social media also offer great flexibility in terms of time, location, and format.
