ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the new rationale for Japan to cooperate with ASEAN in institution-building in the Asia-Pacific. The 1977 Fukuda Doctrine paved the way to enhance Japan–ASEAN collaboration for regional institution-building. Indeed, Japan–ASEAN cooperation has played a critical role in establishing and managing various regional institutions since 1980s.
