B Chalmers, Biographical Dictionary, s.v. Tate. Tate died hopelessly in debt. In earlier days Dorset had financed Prior's education. Prior is said to have been the son of a joiner. He was early left an orphan, and his uncle, who was a vintner, sent him to school at Westminster. Visiting the uncle's tavern, Dorset found the boy reading Horace and from that day undertook the care and cost of Prior's further studies. (Johnson, Lives • •• , Prior.)
