ABSTRACT

One of the treatment options available to listeners who have a severe, permanent hearing loss is a medical device called a cochlear implant (CI). The application of electrical current to stimulate auditory nerve fibers has evolved considerably over the last 50 years. Several excellent reviews of the history and progression of cochlear implant technology and application can be found in the literature (see Loizou, 1998; Loizou, 2006; Møller, 2006; Wilson & Dorman, 2008; Niparko, 2009; especially Eisen, 2009 and Wilson & Dorman, 2009).
