ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the contribution of group and individual expertise to the quality and effectiveness of organizational planning. We focus on the overall expertise of the planner as planning involves multiple skills or abilities, and individuals possess different levels of expertise in each of these. Planning can be viewed as a two-stage process, with the first stage involving thinking and decisions about the plan, and the second, optional, stage when the plan might be attempted or implemented and decision making is required as the planned activities evolve. As with the rest of this volume, we concentrate on decisions and plans that individuals or groups make for others to follow or to work together on. We will also touch upon the planning that occurs during plan execution and how expertise impacts this activity.
