ABSTRACT

In this edited volume, we have set out to examine the problem of managing across diverse cultures in East Asia. We looked at the underpinning influences at the macro-(economy) level, as well as at the micro-(firm) level, which were related to the economy, culture and management in these countries and how far each societal case provides a unique story within the parameters of diversity. We also tried to link dysfunctions in these societies to changing values and analyse the positive and negative characteristics of these. Rather than deal with the region in its entirety, we concentrated on the major players, such as China, Japan and South Korea, as well as in passing the Overseas Chinese (Nanyang) enclaves of Hong Kong SAR, Macau and Taiwan. The rationale for this choice has been spelled out in chapter 1.
