ABSTRACT
FINANCIAL aid from the state to parents for the maintenance of children takes two forms: Assistance in kind and allowances in cash. Assistance in kind is provided by such services as school meals, welfare food, milk, reduced fares, etc. Assistance in cash is mainly through family allowances, child insurance and assistance allowances and child tax allowances. This chapter is concerned with cash allowances only though occasional references to assistance in kind are made.
