ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable business. It explores how businesses interact with sustainability, and examines the concept and practice of CSR. The chapter looks at the voluntary standards and tools used by businesses for managing their environmental and social responsibilities. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) provides businesses with a reporting system aimed at allowing the measurement, understanding and communication of CSR efforts. The International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) has developed several certification systems relevant to CSR and sustainability. The chapter addresses two specific aspects of business engagement with sustainability, namely corporate engagement with climate change and sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). The measurement, reporting and disclosure of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions forms a central element of many businesses' CSR/sustainability reporting. Mitigation is one strategy to reduce the risks posed by climate change and involves the reduction of GHG emissions.
