ABSTRACT

One of the best ways to understand the future of student athletes and school-based counseling services is to recognize the current state of training counseling professionals regarding the needs of this field and population. Professional athletes are followed on the field, off the field, during training camps, while drafting and trading periods are taking place, and during the latter/termination stages of their careers. Student-volunteers and student organizations appear to be part of commonly shared terms and parlance throughout the nation, denote a less commercially skewed angle than can be the case with student athletics. Though coaches, athletic staff may address with their players how to communicate with media, the press, as well as what it means to represent school pride and sportsmanship, the world of social media is not limited to the parameters of sporting events and local news coverage.
