ABSTRACT

This chapter mainly emphasizes the essential components of consulting with teachers and recognizes that coaches can also be teachers of student athletes within K-12 settings, though they are not always the exclusive instructors of all students. The confident teacher is typically defined as one who is accustomed to successful outcomes when working with students. The dependent teacher is typically defined as one who is largely overwhelmed by student and classroom behaviors. Regardless, teachers are often one of the most significant and initially critical stakeholders for a school counselor-as-consultant to collaborate with when it comes to addressing the needs of student athletes, and recognizing what type of teacher-as-consultee is in the room can be extremely helpful when it comes to planning, approaching, and maintaining consultative interventions and approaches. The process of consultation makes some specific demands of the school counselor when working with a student athlete.
