ABSTRACT
Sustainability appraisals (the term used in England, rather than sustainability assessments) of local land use plans have been carried out in England since 1999, English land use planners are reasonably confident in carrying out sustainability appraisals, and sustainability appraisals are also increasingly being carried out for national government policies. It is less clear, however, just how much these appraisals are contributing to more sustainable plan- making.
