ABSTRACT

Soccer is one of the world’s most popular team sports and is performed in all four seasons on most continents, in varying climatic and atmospheric conditions. When soccer games are held during extreme environmental conditions, such as in the heat, in the cold or at altitude, proper preconditioning and precautions are vital for the success and health of the players. The aim of this chapter is to provide the following: (1) an overview of the physiological and mental aspects; and (2) practical recommendations for players, coaches and supporting staff to cope with these special environmental aspects.
