ABSTRACT

Rowing is a physically and technically demanding skill that requires the back to act as a transfer for large forces and moments between the upper and lower extremities (Hagerman, 1984). Rowing is characterized by long-distance aerobic training sessions, which comprise 90 per cent of training volume and typically consist of rowing for 90–120 minutes at 18–20 strokes per minute, covering 20–25 km. Stroke rates during rowing training range from 15–40 strokes per minute and at race pace are typically 32–38 strokes per minute. Further, ergometer rowing is widespread in gyms for general purpose fitness training.
