ABSTRACT

I have included this piece partly to illustrate the difficulties of finding bridges between cultural and biological anthropology, and partly because it is rare for a great foundation such as Novartis, with its extensive powers of patronage, to be publicly criticized. This Novartis conference in London and the publication resulting from it were, in my view, scientifically substandard.
