ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 considers how father-daughter relationships are often ignored or marginalized and how we can redress the situation. How

and why have father-daughter relationships been ignored too often by researchers, institutions, and the media? How do mental health practitioners, medical personnel, and teachers inadvertently dismiss or demean fathers? e chapter then explores the behaviors and attitudes that constitute “good” fathering. What are the differences between good, average, and bad fathers in terms of meeting their daughter’s needs? What do daughters need from their fathers aside from feeling loved? e chapter concludes by addressing an equally compelling yet often ignored question: How does a daughter influence her father’s development, his beliefs, his marriage, and his overall well-being? How does she add to and detract from his happiness and his feelings of self worth?
