ABSTRACT

When children experience mental illness, a number of organizations may become involved. Schools are oft en the fi rst places where behavioral problems become apparent and children begin to receive counseling and other services (Burns et al., 1995). Mental health agencies provide counseling and medication management. Child protective services may refer children to mental health services to recover from maltreatment and improve family dynamics. Juvenile justice systems provide and refer to mental health services (Farmer, Burns, Phillips, Angold, & Costello, 2003).
