ABSTRACT

The term learning disabilities is one of the most broadly used in educational and mental-health literature today. Although the understanding of who is “learning disabled” and what encompasses a learning disability has been the subject of much discussion, the label has included individuals with intellectual disabilities, as well as those who exhibit specific academic skill and processing deficits. It has also included the population of those who underachieve in comparison to measured cognitive abilities. An electronic review of the learning disabilities literature produced discussions of those who exhibit difficulties in functioning in the educational and daily living arenas, as well as those with varied symptoms of mental illness.
