ABSTRACT

[Disciplines are] a normative structure, exerting a strong pull. [S/he] who leaves it for another will experience the opprobrium of the inmates. [S/he] will be left in no doubt that [s/he] has sold out. Even if the move was only temporary, to see the world from another viewpoint, [s/he] should not expect a warm welcome back since [his/her] ease in transcending frameworks will be troubling to those of a narrower faith. That ability to hold in view more than one framework at a time will be sensed as a form of contamination in and of the purity of the tribe’s collective beliefs. The academic world allows critique, but, again, within limits.
