ABSTRACT

The following chapter is based on research into the ‘teaching-research nexus’ funded by the Higher Education Academy (Trowler and Wareham 2007, 2008). It draws on data from semi-structured interviews conducted with 16 academic staff across the four disciplines of Graphic Design, Design for Performance, Fine Art and Fashion Design and across each of the six institutions that make up the University of the Arts, London (UAL). The scope of these interviews focused on research practices. Other interviews on teaching practices were conducted with a different sample of 18 staff in that institution (described in Shreeve et al. 2010), but those are not used for this chapter.
