ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapter, we discussed the relation of accessible to available knowledge, and we described two methods for calculating the A/A ratio. The ratio estimates the accessible portion of available targets, and we illustrated use of the ratio by comparing access by young and older participants to names of prominent individuals and to English vocabulary. In this chapter we describe two large-scale investigations of age-related retrieval of naturalistically acquired knowledge. One deals again with retrieving proper names of prominent individuals; the other deals with retrieval of foreign language vocabulary learned in school.
