EcoNOMICTHEORYontheproblemsofpopulation,or atleastonthequantitativea.spectsoftheseproblems, fallsintotwoclearlyseparateddivisions.Itdiscusses thecauseswhichdeterminethesizeofpopulations, anditdiscusseswhatinfluencethesizeofpopulations exertsupontheproductivityofeffort.Itdiscusses whatmakespopulationsgreatorsmall,andinwhatway economicwelfareisaffectedbytheirgreatnessorsmallness.Neitherofthesetwoinquiriescanbesaidto havereachedafinalstateofcompletion;butupon thesecond,atanyrate,usefulworkhasbeendonein thecourseofthelasfhalfcentury;and,sincemuch ofthisisduetotheteachertowhomthisbookisdedicated,itseemsfittingthatanattemptshouldherebe madetogathersomeofittogether,andtoexplore alittlefurthersomeofitsimplications.
