ABSTRACT

Because of the various research stances I was forced to adopt, each of the following studies draws on a different range of data. In Case Study 5 I was writing as an observer who had access to tapes of the lesson, taped interviews with the teacher, a copy of the teacher’s lesson plan and of the materials used, and my own observation notes; in Case Studies 6 and 8 I was working entirely from tapes of the sessions and from taped interviews with the teachers and (in the final study) with several pupils; while in Case Studies 7 and 9 I was writing up lessons I had myself taught and was therefore able to draw on a much wider range of data.
