ABSTRACT

The three consecutive sessions we shall be looking at in this study formed part of the activities of a school drama club which met on a weekly basis. No independent drama department existed within the school, but drama was used as a teaching method within the English department, one of whose members had special responsibility for developing the use of drama across the curriculum. This member of staff also organized the extracurricular drama work. Extracurricular’ may be misleading in this context, for the work undertaken during the three sessions had developed from issues raised in class. The pupils who attended the sessions did so because they wanted to explore their ideas more fully through improvised drama.
