ABSTRACT

Resistance training exercises that focus on the development of muscular strength and power have gained increasing popularity among children and youth populations. Growing numbers of adolescents now use resistance training as part of their preparation for sport performance and athletic events, while medical professionals are also recognizing the beneficial effects that resistance training can offer to healthy lifestyles and physical well-being. Historically, resistance training in children has been met with scepticism and controversy; largely as a consequence of misunderstandings about the objectives of resistance training and its potential dangers. Today, however, there is little doubt that, when performed correctly, resistance training and weightlifting can produce marked increases in strength and power among children and adolescents. Indeed, the benefits of a correctly prescribed resistance-training programme with competent supervision and correct coaching of exercise techniques now appear to far outweigh any potential risks (Faigenbaum et al., 2009; Hamill, 1994). This chapter will explore how resistance training can be used safely and effectively to promote strength development in children and adolescent populations.
