The changes in Indian society that began post-liberalization in 1991 are likely to have been the fastest and the most significant in Indian history. 2 Although India remains a poor coun try, with an average percapita income still around USD750, it is also home to one of the largest growing middle classes in the world and its role as a major player on the global stage is no longer open to question.
