ABSTRACT
Australian journalism is practiced in an environment that is contextualized by a number of forces. One of these is the historic division between government and non-government media. Australia’s first newspapers were, in effect, official information sheets servicing the needs of the administration of the six British colonies, which later united to form the nation of Australia.
