ABSTRACT

Use of family photographs in grief therapy is a broadly applicable technique that may be employed with bereaved adults, adolescents and children. Photographs can be a powerful tool for memory consolidation and building an internalized representation of the deceased person that facilitates adaptive grieving and a healthy continuing connection. Caution is encouraged when working with individuals who have sustained a traumatic or horrendous death wherein images of the deceased may be psychologically fused with trauma material, making such a technique less predictable.
