ABSTRACT

Climate change is increasingly being accepted as a major problem by policymakers around the world. India is the fifth largest emitter of CO2 worldwide. It accounts for about 4% of world CO2 emissions. Figure 8-1 shows the rise in total carbon emissions in India in the last century and the early years of this century. 1 It shows that the growth in emissions has increased rapidly in the last quarter of a century and shows no signs of tapering off.
