When Shifting Cultivators Migrate to the Cities, How Can the Forest Be Rehabilitated?

Until the early 1990s, land-use pressures on the uplands of northern Thailand were increasing rapidly and playing a major role in the degradation of forests.However, more recently, the situation in some areas has reversed. Land-use pressures on swiddens in the Upper Nan watershed, in Thailand’s far north, for instance, have fallen dramatically and the problem there has become one of land rehabilitation.
